2005 – DDR/PIU Hardpad
As a big fan of the dancing games Konami Dance Dance Revolution and Andamiro Pump It Up, I built myself a dance pad from sturdy materials. An old USB game pad was used as controller.
After the initial construction, some modifications became neccessary. The functioning principle is that the plates are supported around the edge and while stepping on them, they bend down, closing a contact between two metal plates. The pad springs back up on its own due to material stiffness. This is a similar principle to the arcade cabinets, albeit much simpler. The finished pad was extremely robust and had great reaction.
To prevent noise and slipping, the underside had carpet stopping nets and yoga mats attached.
